HELPING THE CHURCH REACH OUT BEYOND ITS WALLS
The children of Canada are in a desperate spiritual crisis. Most have never been in a church, never held a Bible, and never heard the words “Jesus Loves You”. We must not wait until they are teens or adults to reach them. They are open NOW. Now is when we have the greatest opportunity to influence them for God. We believe every church has a God-given responsibility to reach out in a meaningful way to the children of their community.
Many of Canada’s churches struggle to have effective ministry to boys and girls outside of their own church family. In some cases, even ministry to the children of the church family lacks the priority and attention those children need and deserve.
There are several reasons why this occurs. In some churches, there is a lack of emphasis on outreach to children because the leaders or congregation don’t really understand the importance of ministering to children at any early age. They mistakenly believe it’s more important or more productive to focus primarily on those who are older. In some churches there is an understanding of the need to reach out to boys and girls, but they lack the resources to do the job. Still others may have the vision, and even the resources, but they don’t have the experience or “know how”.
At CEF our vision is “every child knowing God”. That’s a job that’s far too big for us to do alone. Even if it were possible for us to reach Ontario’s millions of children on our own, it would not be appropriate. It’s a job best done by the church, building ongoing relationships with children and families in their community. Our job is to come alongside churches, partnering with those who need our assistance, while sometimes working on our own to reach children who are beyond the reach of a local church.
