Hot Like Coffee
I have a problem. I like my coffee hot. I mean, sip-it-slowly-because-it’ll-burn-your-mouth, hot. I also use a lot of milk in my coffee. Really, it’s more of a latte. I don’t like the taste of coffee, so it’s disguised with good amount of milk and too much sweetener.
Here’s the problem: the temperature and the milk are in direct conflict with each other. No matter how hot the coffee is, the milk cools it down to an undrinkable lukewarm. No matter how hot the coffee is, it never heats the milk up. It warms it a little, but overall the temperature of the combined liquid is always cooler than the coffee. Always.
Jesus said to the church in Laodicea, “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth. Revelations 3:16 ESV
God was not saying it’s okay to be cold about Him, but that you have to make a decision. You’re for Him or against Him. There’s no in-between.
The one who is “hot” is 100% committed to Him in every area of life. Wanting to be more like Him, we look to His wisdom in how we live and accept no compromise.
But what happens when we allow some of the world’s ideas to shape how we think? What happens when we choose to accept ideas without properly measuring them against God’s Word? That is like milk being poured into the hot coffee. No matter how hot the coffee, nor how much that coffee wants to stay hot, it will be cooled by the milk.
And God will spit it out of His mouth.
